Sea cloud swallowing the Reek

Croagh Patrick almost completely hidden by a rolling bank of white sea cloud, green fields and houses along Clew Bay in the foreground, County Mayo

A bright day over Murrisk and the mountain has gone. The sea cloud sits on Croagh Patrick like a lid, following the ridge and pouring off toward the bay. The lower slopes, the fields, and the line of houses are still there. The summit is not.

This is the Reek as a lot of people meet it — signed from the abbey, clear at the trailhead, and missing when you look up. The photograph is from the shore at Murrisk, looking back at the climb under that white weather.

If you came for the classic cone and found a white wall instead, this is your print. The mountain is still in there. You just have to sneak a peek at the Reek between the folds of cloud — or accept that Mayo hid it on purpose and buy the evidence.
